Jamel Robinson: CLAY
CLAY is a six-part piano performance composed from the evolving body of scores Jamel Robinson has written for his films. Drawn from both completed works and projects still in development, the compositions are woven together into a single cinematic program, unfolding as one continuous movement of sound. The piece is built to function like a film without images, inviting listeners to experience music that suggests motion, atmosphere, and narrative through the imagination.
One of the central compositions, A Taylor Johnson, anchors the performance. The work was composed in Los Angeles on Henry Taylor’s grand piano while Robinson studied one of Rashid Johnson’s Angry Man paintings from Taylor’s collection. That moment of reflection became a generative point within the program, shaping a musical language that moves between memory, observation, and improvisation.
